The best “breaking the 4th wall” story you’ll read to start the year.

marielikestodraw:

Last week, something quite amazing happened.
If you follow Duncan Jones on twitter, you might have somehow read it, but if you don’t, here is an epic recap.

Duncan Jones, director of “Moon” (and also “Source Code”, and also son of David Bowie) as was about to start live-tweeting about his own film when it was going to be shown on the BBc2 (30 dec).
And somehow, someone pointed him toward a “Moon” fic on AO3, “Helping you is what I do” by Wildgoosery, and he tweeted a link to and saying it was a “gem”.

It doesn’t stop here.

Jones went on AO3 again and posted a comment.

To tune into the tone of Moon this well denotes a rare sensitivity & empathy. You’ve done an extraordinary job. It made my heart ache. Poor Sam. Poor Gerty. Poor Sam… And Sam… And Sam. Thank you so much for helping Moon to live on beyond our small film. I hope I can widen this universe for you in future films, if for no other reason but to see what you will do with it. A fan of your speculations, Duncan Jones. Writer/director Moon.

To which a stunned Wildgoosery - after confirmation that this wasn’t a hoax - replied

I’m just going to sit here for a while being utterly stunned!

!!!!!!!!!

Well, this is last thing I ever expected to find in the comments of my little story! I would be skeptical of its origins, except a poke through twitter reveals that you were pointed this direction yesterday!

I have no idea what to say, other than “Thank you!” Moon had a tremendous impact on me — I saw it twice in the theater, and have the DVD on hand for when I want my faith in modern science fiction filmmaking restored — and in writing this story, I came to even further appreciate the thought and care and craftsmanship that went into what you created. Hard SF movies are a rare thing these days, and quality ones are practically non-existent. After Moon and Source Code, I look forward to seeing what you do moving forward.

<3

This literally made my fuckin day. Such a brilliant example of how the breaking of the 4th wall can be an good emotional ride for both sides and show that being a fan of something is such a great thing to do/be.

Slow clap, Mr Jones.

Hey guys, don’t tweet/tumbl to this person or yell at them, please just go report their twitter for harassment. They are harassing Jared with cruel and mean messages and being very hateful towards him.
Most Destiel/Wincest/SPN fans are amazing wonderful people and I know they wouldn’t agree with this behavior! Let’s do what we can to report them here on tumblr and also on twitter. :)

Teen Wolf Panel @ Wincon
At Wincon 2012 in Dallas, Texas, we hosted a Teen Wolf Panel. They discussed the characters, the tropes, the genre, the fandom, and everything in between, and they were awesome enough to agree to being recorded so that even the people who couldn’t attend Wincon this year were able to hear the discussion.
Panelists: daunt, aggybird, canistakahari, ifshehadwings, affectingly, & waterofthemoon
Listen on SoundCloud or Download Here @ MediaFire
Quick warning: You might keep the volume at medium because there are some moments of shouting from the audience and a howl at the end!
About Wincon: Wincon is a by-the-fans, for-the-fans operation. It is the internet IRL. Meta, Fic, Art, Squee, and Dancing! Next year, Wincon’s going to be in Vegas, and we’d love to see you there! Official dates and the hotel will be announced by the end of November. Follow on Tumblr, Twitter, or watch the website for updates!

GUYS HERE IS THE AUDIO FILE FROM THE TEEN WOLF PANEL@ WINCON. You can listen to us talk about feelings and squee and also talk some great social justice stuff and how TW can improve.
I am the dick who keeps saying LET’S MOVE ON OKAY.
We let the crowd add a lot in, too! The mass shrieking you hear is from all the great art we had on the screen during the panel. :’) THANKS to gryzmolic, kickingshoes, marielikestodraw, mm_coconut and MANY MORE for letting us use their work! <3
Dorkily, we ended the panel on a howl, lol.
PS: YOU GUYS SHOULD COME NEXT YEAR it’s so much fun! We had drunken TW viewings the night before. 8D

Teen Wolf Fandom’s wars of sorts

marielikestodraw:

Are you kidding me. Are you seriously doing this.

We were blessed with an AMAZING PANEL. Diverse, funny, with so much love for all the characters, discussion of everything from bisexuality on TV to characters development and funny anecdotes.

So much love going both ways.

Some inevitable mentions of Sterek here and there, slightly awkward but nothing extreme and nothing Jeff and the moderator of the panel couldn’t deal with.

Some amazing cosplayers of various characters and so much excitement for all the season 3 reveals.

And overall so much heart and love and genuine feelings from both the audience and the two guests who were definitely, obviously, delighted and having a blast.

And what people are doing in the tag? saying “I hate this fandom” because of the few Sterek mentions in the panel, a side saying Posey was ignored (WHAT??) and the Sterek fans are the devil, and the other side being extremely aggressive about their Sterek shipping.

WHAT ABOUT THE 90% OF US IN THE FUCKIN MIDDLE WHO LOVE THE SHOW AND EVERYONE IN IT AND ALSO STEREK AND IT’S ALL FINE??
What about how probably 90% of the panel was NOT about Sterek and was about the show as a whole? how about this show functions with a main cast group, more than a solo character hence why everyone was talking about everyone.

Don’t do this guys, don’t make drama out of something that wasn’t drama. There will always be some awkward moments in fannish panels, of any kind, but for a fandom that has an history of being frankly pushy about its main slash ship (and i think people should know that it has come to a point where this is useless and awkward more than anything to constantly shout about it, im 150% convinced the message has been received loud and clear, take a break, support it in a quiet, strong way….) or shame some of its shippers one way or the other, it was a surprisingly peaceful, characters driven panel and it is NOT the epic fail that some are trying to say it was. So. Far. From. If.
come on guys.

#fandom #the conflict only exists because you create it #most of this fandom is moderate about everything #and able to enjoy without the extremes

THANK YOU MARIE, I am so glad to read this! :’)

Please everyone read and reblog!

I don’t know how many of you are in or near the Seattle, WA area, but I just wanted to show off this awesome site Mamishka made for the Sherlock Convention! It’s got all the information, but the basics are this: You have to pre-register so the Con space can be paid for ahead of time. She’s got a lot of panelists lined up, and I’ve decided that I’m going to do a limited edition screen print poster; I have a design for it planned out, and it’s pretty awesome. The con is Nov 3 and 4!

I’m only going to hand-print 50 of the posters, and you get one free (with some other awesome stuff from Reapersun, too, among other things) if you get the VIP membership. It would be really great if we could get this going, because I’m really looking forward to attending and seeing you all!

Fandom Chinese with Arizona! Today’s lesson is “fanfiction”. This lesson was also my first foray in using iMovie so if there is anything I can adjust, be sure to let me know.

I also learned I have a tendency to cock my head a lot when talking and to bounce around in my seat, which makes look like a puppy on a lot of caffeine. I’ll work on that.

Disclaimers and the like are located here. And make sure to send me an ask if you have something fandom related that you would like to learn!

Every single time someone makes a post about how all m/m is fetishizing and anyone who writes it is a cesspool of internalized misogyny I just have to laugh. There are definitely some problematic aspects of m/m slash and definitely some people who do (some admittedly) fetishize m/m relationships. If you do the stuff on this list, you should probably check yourself. Hard.

 • Do you tell everyone that you hope your children are gay men so you can ship them with their friends?
 • Do you ignore and/or vilify the lady characters?
 • Do you ignore the men of color because you think only white men are attractive and interesting?
 • Do you ship two attractive white dudes, and only two attractive white dudes, in everything?
 • Have you ever asked who the woman is in a relationship between two men? Do you designate a male character the “woman” in the relationship? This is not okay because the whole like, point of a relationship between two gay dudes is that we are, you know, dudes.
 • Do you call gay men in relationships that are not part of the yaoi subgenre “seme” and “uke”? On that note, do you make a huge deal out of stuff like “Who tops?” This is a really silly thing to do! Some gay men who have anal have a preference one way or another, some don’t. Sexual preferences are not always dictated by personality traits, either! Some men who paint their nails prefer to top, and some lumberjacks prefer to bottom.
 • Do you put anal sex on a pedestal as the only kind of “real” sex two men can have? A lot of gay men don’t even have anal sex.
 • Do you think that “true love” is between two men because ladies are gross?
 • If there is a feminine male character who shows canon interest in women, have you decided that he has to be gay?
 • Do you say that you are a “gay man in a woman’s body”? Please stop saying that. Queer trans* men are, you know, literally gay men trapped in women’s bodies, and they have to face a pretty fair amount of adversity for that! Claiming to be a gay man in a woman’s body because you like to read and write about gay men is trivializing that. Please don’t do it.
 • Do you see a picture of two gay men walking down the street and freak out about it? I mean, like, we do that. We do stuff! We’re people. We do things like walk down the street and eat food. There’s no reason to make a huge deal out of that!

If you answered no to these questions, then I am pretty sure you don’t need to check yourself. I don’t think anyone with a lick of sense is going to argue that there is a lot of misogyny in fandom, internalized or otherwise. But occasionally enjoying m/m is not an infallible indicator of internalized misogyny.

A lot of people who enjoy m/m and f/f are, you know, queer people. Queer men, queer women, queer non-binary folks. It is not fetishizing for queer folks to want to read and write about queer people. Whenever this argument comes up, we are always the ones left out. It is always a strongly worded letter to the Evil Fangirls.

It is entirely possible for a lady, queer or otherwise, to write respectful fanfiction about gay men that normalizes gay relationships. This actually like, happens a lot. While I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being shallow as long as your version of shallow doesn’t exclude marginalized groups, I am pretty sick of seeing ladies who like m/m in any aspect being repeatedly dismissed as a bunch of screaming and woman hating fangirls unable to think critically about material. What was that about misogyny again?

fucking signed.

Two points:

The “X trapped in Y body” language (with reference to trans* people) is occasionally really, really problematic, because it implies that bodies are gendered in a way other than by the people who inhabit them. Some people are okay with that sort of language, and if they want to use it for themselves, that’s cool. But don’t use it as a generalised reference to all trans* people.

Also, queer people can, in fact, fetishise queer relationships. If they’re fetishising their own sexuality (as in, a lesbian writing a highly sexualised/fetishised fic about lesbians), that’s cool, that’s fine, whatever. But if they’re fetishising another group (see especially cis queer people who fetishise trans* people), then that’s not okay. It’s acceptable for queer people to want to write about queer people (and for trans* people to want to write about trans* people, in the cases where trans* =/= queer), but that doesn’t mean that they can’t and don’t fetishise them. It still happens, and it doesn’t make it okay just because the person writing it is queer.

Other than that, this is a really good post.
